Despite a competitive landscape in 2024 for role-playing games, Sega's Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth continues to stand out as a noteworthy experience. Launched earlier this year, the game offers a substantial open-world adventure set in Honolulu and is now more accessible through sales and subscription services.
The ninth mainline installment in the Yakuza, now Like a Dragon, series brings together long-time protagonist Kazuma Kiryu and new hero Ichiban Kasuga. Their quest to find Kasuga's mother quickly escalates into an international conspiracy that involves organized crime and governmental intrigue. While the narrative may be complex, it is a hallmark of the series' engaging storytelling.
Infinite Wealth excels as a virtual vacation simulator, with a meticulously crafted rendition of Hawaii. Players can explore iconic locations like Waikiki Beach, browse shops in a luxury mall, or navigate the backstreets via scooter. The game complements its setting with a vast array of unique minigames, many of which are themed around its tropical locale.
Among these diversions is "Crazy Delivery," a mode inspired by Sega's Crazy Taxi series, tasking players with delivering goods across Honolulu for rewards. "Dondoko Island" offers a simulation experience akin to Animal Crossing, where players can transform a derelict island into a thriving resort by crafting furniture and building facilities. Another minigame, "Sicko Snap," humorously involves photographing peculiar individuals in public spaces, serving as an engaging way to familiarize oneself with the game's environments.
The game's turn-based combat system incorporates an extensive job system, allowing party members to specialize in over two dozen roles, including unique archetypes like Polynesian fire dancers and surfboard-wielding aquanauts. Encounters range from quirky tourists and aggressive individuals to formidable foes such as a great white shark and even an obstructive construction crane.
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is currently available at a reduced price on Steam, with a 75% discount until August 27, bringing its cost down to $17.49. Additionally, the game is included with Xbox Game Pass for Premium or Ultimate subscribers and is part of the PlayStation Plus library for Extra and Premium members, offering multiple avenues for players to experience its extensive content.
