Wizards of the Coast has announced a new Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair Superdrop featuring the Masters of the Universe franchise. This collection, titled "The Most Powerful Superdrop in the Universe," will include five separate card drops with artwork inspired by the classic toys, animation, and packaging of the '80s series.
Central to the announcement is a reimagining of Command Tower, a vital card for the Commander format. The new version features Castle Grayskull, the legendary fortress from Masters of the Universe, as its full-art treatment. This iconic location, known as the source of He-Man's power on the planet Eternia, is instantly recognizable to fans of the franchise. The card is designed to be double-sided, allowing players to choose between displaying Castle Grayskull or Snake Mountain, Skeletor's stronghold, depending on their deck's allegiance.
Command Tower is a land that can tap for one mana of any color within a Commander's color identity and does not enter the battlefield tapped. Its utility makes it a near-necessity for any Commander deck with two or more colors. While Command Tower has seen numerous reprints since its debut in 2011, making most existing copies inexpensive, this Secret Lair version emphasizes aesthetic appeal over reducing the cost of a rare card.
The "Sold Separately" Drop, which includes the Castle Grayskull Command Tower, also features other Masters of the Universe reskins. Battle Cat will replace Fortune, Loyal Steed, Panthor will take the place of The Gitrog, Ravenous Ride, and the Bone Throne will replace the Throne of the God-Pharaoh. Additionally, the Sword of War and Peace is being transformed into He-Man's Sword of Power.
This five-card drop will be available for $29.99 in nonfoil and $39.99 in foil when the Superdrop goes on sale September 14. Other notable reprints within the Masters of the Universe Secret Lair include Sakashima the Impostor as Man-E-Faces, valued at $14, Emiel the Blessed as Swift Wind, also $14, Konda's Banner as Battle Harness ($12), Breach the Multiverse ($11), and Necrogen Mists ($11). While these individual cards may not reach the price point of highly sought-after staples, the collection offers meaningful reprints for cards that can otherwise cost $10 or more, all presented with a distinctive blend of classic and original artwork.
