Wizards of the Coast has outlined its Magic: The Gathering release schedule for 2027, confirming a total of six sets. This marks a reduction from the seven sets released in 2026 and includes a shift in the balance between original Magic planes and Universes Beyond crossovers. The company plans for three sets to be "Universes Within," focusing on existing Magic lore, and three "Universes Beyond" sets, which feature collaborations with other intellectual properties.

Original Planes for 2027

The year will begin with "Nauctis: The Sunken Realm," scheduled for release on February 5, 2027. This set will explore an underwater world, featuring themes of deep-sea humans, merfolk, homarids, and seals. The narrative centers on warring kingdoms and unlikely heroes rising against abyssal depths.

Following Nauctis, Magic will return to the cyberpunk plane of Kamigawa in "Kamigawa: Titanbreach," set to launch on June 4, 2027. This set will introduce a dramatic crossover, as the plane of Ikoria collides with Kamigawa, creating a scenario where mechs battle kaiju. Players will be able to engage in combat either as mech pilots or by harnessing creatures from Ikoria.

The final original Magic plane set for 2027 is "Zhalfir," slated for release on October 1. This set is positioned as a tribute to long-time Magic fans, exploring Zhalfir as its own plane and reintroducing the chronomancer Teferi Akosa. Zhalfir will lean into an afrofantasy subgenre, promising mind-bending cards and a visual design that embraces this unique aesthetic, while also aiming to evoke the feel of Magic from earlier eras with contemporary design principles.

Universes Beyond in 2027

While specific details for the three Universes Beyond sets in 2027 are still forthcoming, release windows have been established for April 5, August 6, and November 19. Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks has indicated that future Universes Beyond collaborations will likely be "a bit more fantasy-adjacent" and will steer clear of settings like New York City, acknowledging fan feedback on recent crossovers. The specific IPs for these sets remain speculative, with potential candidates including Game of Thrones, Elden Ring, Warhammer: Age of Sigmar, The Legend of Zelda, The Witcher, or further Marvel collaborations.
