A significant sinkhole has emerged in Malibu, California, jeopardizing the residence of actor Nicolas Cage. The sinkhole, which has expanded to roughly 30 by 30 feet, caused the driveway of Cage's property to collapse after heavy rainfall in the area.
Initially estimated at around eight feet on Monday, the sinkhole rapidly widened to approximately 30 feet by Tuesday morning. Emergency services responded to a gas leak resulting from the event. The dramatic expansion led to the driveway's collapse, leaving the house vulnerable to further damage.
Malibu City officials have declared at least five homes on the street unsafe for entry, and access to the area is restricted due to the collapsed road. The property, which Cage reportedly purchased two years ago for $10.5 million, is built on stanchions over the ocean. Powerful waves and heavy rain, following a hurricane warning, are believed to be the cause of the sinkhole's formation.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported. In unrelated news, Nicolas Cage recently commented on the single-season run of his Amazon Prime Video series, Spider-Noir, which earned five awards at the Creative Arts Emmys following its cancellation. Cage described the one-season approach as "perfect" for the project.
