Bungie has announced that Marathon's next significant update, originally planned for September 22, has been postponed. The update, now named Symbiosis, is slated for release on December 8 and will introduce a new permanent player-versus-environment (PvE) mode.
This delay signifies a strategic shift for Bungie, moving away from a strict seasonal schedule for major content additions. The studio stated in a blog post that this change will grant the development team more flexibility to build, test, and refine features before their release. "Since launch, you’ve told us Marathon needs more depth, more variety, stronger progression, and better reasons to keep playing over the long term. We agree," Bungie explained. "Addressing that feedback requires us to change both what we’re building and how we deliver it."
The Symbiosis update will also include a new Runner shell, a refreshed Perimeter zone, a social space with a firing range, an experimental team deathmatch mode, and improvements to new player onboarding. Bungie described it as "the first major step in Marathon’s next chapter."
Prior to the Symbiosis release, a smaller, focused update is scheduled for October 6. This interim update will reset player progression and the in-game economy, refresh rewards, and improve the live game's stability, while allowing the team additional time for the larger December release.
Promotional material for the Symbiosis update suggests its PvE mode may involve combat against insectoid alien creatures, reminiscent of the gameplay found in Helldivers 2. Bungie emphasized that this is only the beginning of their plans to sustain Marathon's ongoing development. The studio expressed optimism for the game's future, especially considering recent developments with Destiny 2 and the continued support Marathon receives from its player base.
