Season 2 of Bungie's Marathon has inadvertently introduced an economic imbalance due to an overwhelming amount of loot, a situation the developer is actively investigating. Players are reportedly extracting significantly more valuable items than in the previous season, leading to surplus in their inventories.
Bungie detailed the issue in a recent Steam post, noting that progression and access to power have accelerated beyond their intended pace. "Out of the gate in Season 2, progression and access to power moved much faster than the previous season," the developer stated. As a point of comparison, the average wealth accumulated by week two of Season 2 mirrors that of weeks 11 and 12 from Season 1, a rate Bungie acknowledges is not healthy for the game's economy.
Several factors have contributed to this accelerated loot acquisition. Bungie has addressed and fixed bugs that allowed for "guaranteed gold drops in places that shouldn't have them." The introduction of Sponsored Kits early in the season also provided a boost to progression. Furthermore, a combination of the "Sponsored Survival grind" and a valuable chest located in the Complex Control area allowed players to heavily farm Marathon's predominantly PvE modes.
Despite these identified issues, the core reason for the proliferation of higher rarity loot remains elusive. Bungie stated that this phenomenon was not observed during internal playtests and that the team is "still unravelling the source." This suggests an underlying, as yet undiscovered, issue is contributing to the loot abundance.
In the interim, Bungie has implemented temporary adjustments to curb progression. These include disabling boosted containers and reducing Cradle XP rates. The developer plans to revert these changes later in the season once more permanent solutions are in place. The development team is working to identify the root cause of the loot economy disruption.
