Mario Kart World, a prominent launch title for the Nintendo Switch 2, has received its 1.7.0 update, introducing a notable, albeit unannounced, alteration to its item distribution system. For the initial 20 seconds of each race, players in first place now have a chance to acquire more powerful items, such as Triple Mushrooms and the Boo, which were previously exclusive to players further back in the pack.

Traditionally, Mario Kart games have employed a system where leading players receive less advantageous items like coins or bananas, while those trailing behind are gifted potent power-ups to help them catch up. This design choice aims to keep races competitive and exciting. However, the recent update seems to adjust this balance for the early stages of a race. This tweak allows players who achieve an early lead to further solidify their position, rather than immediately facing an onslaught of stronger items from opponents.

This change was not detailed in Nintendo's official patch notes, leading players to discover and discuss the alteration on social media. Early reports suggest that after the initial 20-second window, the item distribution reverts to its more traditional, heavily skewed format, with leaders once again being more likely to receive basic items while those behind gain access to powerful offensive tools like Lightning, Bullet Bill, and Blooper.

The 1.7.0 update also officially introduces the first new rally routes to Mario Kart World: Drill Rally, connecting Wario Shipyard and Bowser’s Castle, and Boomerang Rally, which spans from Salty Salty Speedway to Whistlestop Summit. These routes are part of the Knockout Tour. This addition marks the first new content of its kind since the game's release over a year ago, a notable departure from the franchise's history of regularly adding new tracks. Nintendo has indicated that "additional Knockout Tour routes" are planned for future updates.

Beyond the item system and new rallies, the patch includes several other adjustments. The update boosts the acceleration performance of certain characters and vehicles with lower acceleration, and increases gliding speeds for some characters and vehicles. A new ramp has been added to the race route from Airship Fortress to Bowser’s Castle. Additionally, Photo Mode now supports the addition of stickers, controllable via touch or mouse. Other fixes address issues related to Time Trials, gliding mechanics, character collisions, online play, item throwing, and various course-specific glitches to improve the overall gameplay experience.
