Marvel Comics is set to launch its own version of DC's popular Compact Comics line with new collected editions for Jonathan Hickman's inaugural year of the Ultimate Universe.
Announced via the official Marvel Comics X account, these new paperbacks will gather the first 12 issues of flagship series such as Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate Black Panther, Ultimate X-Men, and Ultimates. While these series already have trade paperback collections available, the key innovation lies in the publishing format. Marvel is branding these as "compact comic" editions, priced at $9.99 each, directly aligning with the cost of DC's Compact Comics. While specific dimensions have not yet been revealed, it is anticipated they will match the digest size of DC's offering.
This move comes after previous attempts by Marvel to replicate DC's success with more affordable collected editions. In 2024, Marvel introduced the Marvel Premier Collection. Although similar in concept, these editions were slightly larger and priced at $14.99 per volume. A significant point of contention for readers was the design of the covers, which prominently featured "Premier Collection" branding, seen as less elegant than the understated design of DC's Compact Comics. Despite these criticisms, the Premier Collection has seen some commercial success.
Several Premier Collection volumes are still slated for release through 2026 and 2027. The introduction of the new compact comic format for the Ultimate Universe collections raises questions about the future of both initiatives within Marvel's publishing strategy. However, the widespread adoption and reader appeal of the Compact Comics concept suggest that embracing this format may be Marvel's most effective path forward.
The new Marvel compact comic editions for the Ultimate Universe year one collections are scheduled for release in April and June of 2027.
