Marvel Studios has officially confirmed that a film based on the cosmic superhero Nova is in development. The confirmation came from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige in a post-panel interview following the studio's San Diego Comic-Con presentation.

While a Nova movie was not formally announced during the Hall H panel, which saw updates on projects like Ghost Rider and Black Panther 3, Feige addressed the project in a conversation with Brandon Davis. When asked directly about a Nova film, Feige stated, "Not a damn thing, but it's a movie," providing the first official confirmation of its existence.

Reports of a Nova movie had surfaced earlier, with screenwriter Michael Waldron attached. Waldron has a history with Marvel's recent phases, having created the Disney Plus series Loki, written Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and co-written Avengers: Doomsday. Earlier development on Nova was reportedly planned as a Disney Plus series before being scrapped.

The character of Nova is traditionally Richard Rider, a member of the Nova Corps, an intergalactic police force that was previously depicted in the film Guardians of the Galaxy. The Nova Corps faced a significant blow when Annihilus attacked, an event that played a role in Marvel Comics' Annihilation storyline and influenced the direction of the Guardians of the Galaxy films.

Considering other announced projects like Avengers: Secret Wars, Ghost Rider, and Black Panther 3, a Nova movie is not expected to be released until 2029 at the earliest.
