Marvel Rivals is set to dramatically decrease its storage footprint with an upcoming update, aiming to alleviate pressure on players' increasingly crowded SSDs. The Season 9.5 update, scheduled for August 7, will reduce the game's install size by approximately 15GB on PlayStation 5 and Xbox consoles, bringing the total down from 73GB. PC players will see an even more substantial reduction, with the file size shrinking by a remarkable 40GB.
This amounts to a roughly 20 percent reduction for consoles and over 57 percent for the PC version. According to Creative Director Guangyun Chen, the significant decrease is achieved through a "massive texture compression overhaul" that "drastically shrink[s] the game's footprint" without compromising visual quality. Players will need to re-download the entire package with the Season 9.5 update, which will be larger than usual initially, but will result in a much lighter final install size.
Marvel Rivals has maintained a strong player base since its launch in late 2024, remaining a popular title on both Xbox and PlayStation. The developers are actively working on new content designed to coincide with major Marvel Cinematic Universe releases. However, the game has not been without its challenges. A recent update introduced UI changes that have led to player frustration, contributing to a 'mixed' rating on Steam. The development team has shown responsiveness to player feedback, fostering hope within the community that these issues will be addressed.
