Insomniac Games' upcoming action title, Marvel's Wolverine, will be set in a universe where the X-Men have not yet emerged. Developers revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that while figures like Spider-Man are known to humanity, mutants remain largely in the shadows, often feared or targeted for extermination.

Wolverine himself will be part of Team X, a black-ops group focused on mutant survival. This detail aligns with early gameplay footage that showed Wolverine acting more independently, despite familiarity with other mutants. Even Jean Grey, who appears in the game's State of Play trailer, sports a costume distinct from her traditional yellow and blue and her connection to Wolverine is left ambiguous.

The roster for Team X is not fully detailed, but characters such as Sabretooth, Omega Red, Lady Deathstrike, and Mystique, all former members of the team in various comic iterations, are confirmed to be present. It is unclear if they will be allies or adversaries to Wolverine, as he appears to confront them at different points in the game.

The interview also touched on Insomniac's approach to the character of Wolverine and the performance of actor Liam McIntyre. McIntyre shared that he drew inspiration from footage of rabid dogs to embody Wolverine's feral nature, a commitment that his collaborators described as "terrifying." McIntyre expressed his trust in the development team, stating that their support allowed him to take significant risks with his portrayal.

Animation director Brian Wyser affirmed that this collaborative trust contributes to the quality of the final product. Marvel's Wolverine is slated for release on September 15 as an exclusive for the PlayStation 5.
