Insomniac Games offered a closer look at Marvel's Wolverine during a San Diego Comic-Con panel, revealing 13 new details about the upcoming single-player adventure. The game is set in Earth-1048, the same alternate dimension as Marvel's Spider-Man, with Insomniac having previously hinted at this connection in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 through references to Trask Industries and graffiti that includes an "X" and the name "Beast."
Wolverine himself is presented as a 200-year-old mutant, a detail that influences his personality and gameplay. Game director Mike Daly described this Wolverine as cynical and candid, keeping others at a distance due to past hurts. His youthful appearance is attributed to his mutant healing factor, while decades of combat have made him wary of forming close bonds. Gameplay mechanics will emphasize claw combat, leveraging his healing factor, a deep-seated rage, enhanced senses for tracking, and his powerful physical strength.
The X-Men have not yet formed in this era. Instead, mutants operate in the shadows through a group called Team X, which functions with a more morally ambiguous compass than the traditional X-Men. The game will explore Wolverine's amnesia, with players uncovering layers of his past. While not an origin story, the narrative suggests Jean Grey will play a role in helping Logan recover his lost memories through psychic dream-like sequences.
Insomniac Games is planning a story with twists and turns, a signature of their previous Marvel titles. Liam McIntyre, the voice and motion capture actor for Wolverine, expressed excitement over the narrative's unexpected developments. "There's so many twists and turns, and stuff that drops my jaw on the ground," McIntyre stated. "There's a moment in this that's… I can't wait for you to play it."
The primary antagonist revealed is Bolivar Trask, the billionaire behind the Sentinel program, who views mutants as an existential threat. Creative director Marcus Smith noted Trask's motivation stems from his belief that mutants pose a danger to humanity, leading him to use his resources and a private army, including cybernetically enhanced Reavers, to eliminate mutantkind.
Jean Grey is positioned as an unexpected ally. Narrative director Walt Williams explained that she is on her own, seeking a safe haven for mutants who cannot pass as human. "She wants to give them what she didn't have; she wants to give them a home, somewhere safe, where they can just live their normal life," Williams said. While mutants are being persecuted, Jean seeks to provide a sanctuary, a goal complicated by threats like Bolivar Trask.
A dynamic between Logan and Jean Grey is also a key element. Despite Jean's comic book association with Cyclops, the game will explore a spark between Logan and Jean as they work together to protect mutants. Williams described them as "lost and broken souls" who find hope in each other, leading to a potentially transformative, though not initially defined as romantic, connection.
Team X, a black ops group formed decades prior by Nathaniel Essex (Mr. Sinister), is also a significant factor. Although Wolverine left the group three years before the game's events, circumstances will draw him back. Essex is one of the few individuals Wolverine trusts, having previously found Logan during a feral episode, helped restore his humanity, and offered him a place on Team X.
The game will feature updated costumes for familiar characters like Sabretooth, who sports his signature orange-accented attire with fur lining, and Mystique, who dons her classic black-and-white outfit with skull accents and weaponry. The Hand, a ninja death-cult led by Lady Deathstrike, will be another faction posing a threat to Wolverine, with the game exploring his past encounters with them.
Marvel's Wolverine will also include a crossover element with the fighting game Marvel's Tokon: Fighting Souls. Players will be able to obtain a cel-shaded outfit for Wolverine in Marvel's Wolverine, inspired by his appearance in Marvel's Tokon. Conversely, players of Marvel's Tokon can unlock an outfit for that game's Wolverine that reflects his Earth-1048 costume.
The game's soundtrack is being composed by David Fleming, known for his work on HBO's The Last of Us. The first track from the score is available now, with the full album set for release on August 28.
