Reviews for Insomniac Games' Marvel's Wolverine have surfaced, revealing a mixed reception for the highly anticipated PlayStation title. While some aspects of the game have drawn criticism for repetitiveness, a significant point of appreciation among players and critics is the meticulous detail afforded to Wolverine's appearance, particularly the degradation of his suit during combat and the surprising inclusion of detailed body hair.

Comparisons to Insomniac's previous Spider-Man games highlight that Wolverine features a more gory and violent presentation. This allows for frequent and dramatic depictions of Logan's suit being torn and damaged during battles. However, the game also incorporates Wolverine's signature healing factor, which rapidly repairs his attire. This design choice, according to Insomniac, aims to strike a balance between reflecting brutal combat and maintaining a visually appealing presentation. "You can’t play through most of the game wearing just shredded rags on his body," explained Insomniac head of technology Mike Fitzgerald to IGN. He elaborated that the team sought to find the right balance between clothing that reflects the gameplay and cinematic moments where the suit restores itself to preserve Wolverine's powerful image.

Senior project director Jess Reiner-Reed further noted that a Logan constantly appearing in tattered clothing could diminish the player's sense of power. "Early on, you would be playing through missions and your clothes are shredded for way too long," she stated. "You don’t feel as powerful as you’re playing through."

Beyond the suit damage, a particularly lauded detail is the realistic depiction of Logan's body hair. Players have observed extensive body hair on his shoulders, chest, and back, even in areas where his costume is shredded. This level of granular detail in character rendering, especially for body hair, is often overlooked in modern gaming. The game's engine appears to simulate different reactions to damage across various costume types, with formal wear maintaining more integrity while casual outfits like denim jackets and flannel shirts tear more readily. The iconic yellow suit also strategically reveals portions of his physique. While the immediate repair of clothing in cutscenes can sometimes break immersion, the system for suit damage and regeneration is generally seen as a technically impressive feature that enhances the combat experience.
