Marvel Comics is set to introduce a new ongoing series, Maximum X-Men, which will see a team of mutant heroes taking on the mantle of global protectors in the wake of the Avengers' apparent downfall. The series, spinning out of the upcoming Avengers: Armageddon storyline, is described as being as pivotal to the Avengers' future as 2004's Avengers: Disassembled.
During a panel at SDCC 2026, Marvel revealed that Storm will spearhead this new team. The roster includes familiar faces such as Wolverine, Colossus, Bishop, Iceman, Psylocke, and Firestar, joined by Justice. Their primary mission will be to defend the Earth from emerging threats. The official description highlights their role: "Mutants by birth, heroes by choice! And their first challenge is a full-on invasion from the Negative Zone! Is this Annihilus again—or something far, far worse?"
Maximum X-Men #1 is slated for release in December 2026. The series is written by Chris Yost, known for his work on X-Force, and features art by Tony Daniel, who has previously worked on X-Men titles.
The panel also provided updates on other Marvel titles. New cover art and details were shared for several Avengers-related books releasing this fall. A teaser drawn by Avengers artist Chip Zdarsky suggests a significant role for The Punisher in the second arc of an upcoming Avengers series. Additionally, Joshua Williamson's Iron Man comic will begin double-shipping in December to coincide with the launch of parallel storylines: "Incarcerated Iron Man" and "War Machines."
