ArcSystem Works and Marvel Games have detailed their approach to balancing Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls following player feedback from early betas and discussed the design philosophy behind their rendition of Magneto. The developers emphasized a commitment to maintaining the game's core mechanics while iterating based on community input.

Evolving Gameplay Through Player Feedback

Kazuto Sekine, Battle Director on Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls, explained that continuous communication with the player base has been instrumental in achieving a balanced game design. "We feel that we’ve been able to maintain the core of the mechanics, while also we’ve had this continued communication between ourselves and the player base as we work on development and I feel that has helped us establish a great balance in the game design," Sekine stated. Michael Francisco of Marvel Games echoed this sentiment, welcoming the feedback from the Fighting Game Community (FGC), which he described as "one of the most hardcore communities in all of gaming." He added that such input is seen as coming "from a place of love and people want the game to succeed."

Story Mode Structure

Producer Takeshi Yamanaka provided insight into the game's story mode, describing a shared overall structure. The narrative follows a promoter and a champion who have arrived on Earth, with the champion seeking powerful fighters. The promoter extends invitations to heroes and villains, with characters like Captain America and Storm serving as leaders whose journeys and challenges the story will cover, offering approximately ten hours of content with playable battles throughout.

Character Design Philosophy

When approaching the design of established Marvel characters like Doctor Doom, Storm, Spider-Man, and Magneto, the development team aims to create "the coolest possible version of these characters that we can at ArcSystem Works." Sekine noted that while there's respect for previous iterations in games like Marvel versus Capcom, their policy is to express each character's unique identity, drawing from comics, movies, and animated series. They consider how to translate these identities and powers into fun gameplay mechanics. For some characters, core abilities remain central, while others allow for more creative adjustments. For instance, while Iron Man is expected to utilize beam attacks, the team had more leeway with other characters.

Researching the Marvel Universe

ArcSystem Works invested significant effort into understanding the Marvel Universe, especially given that many team members were initially less familiar with the source material compared to Western audiences. Staff members who were long-time Marvel fans provided initial guidance, supplemented by resources like Marvel Unlimited and personal purchases of comics. The development floor features a substantial collection of comics, and team members often present on specific characters to share knowledge. Michael Francisco highlighted Marvel's own impression of the team's thorough research, noting that they even consulted with Akitomo-san, who previously worked on official Japanese translations for Marvel Comics, to aid in understanding and translating material in real-time. The developers meticulously referenced comic panels for key frames in character animations, demonstrating a deep commitment to authenticity.

Magneto's Unique Design

The design for Magneto specifically focused on centering his gameplay around his magnetic abilities and gravity-related aspects. Sekine explained the goal was to make his magnetism the core of his mechanics, citing examples like creating debris for weapons or pulling opponents in. The development team introduced a "magnetized state" that can be inflicted on opponents, offering a new dimension to the character's playstyle. Magneto's attacks also incorporate environmental elements; depending on the stage, he will use different objects, such as debris or car parts, manipulated by his powers. Francisco added that Marvel's request was to showcase his manipulation of metal as much as possible, which proved to be a technical and design challenge. The resulting Magneto is envisioned as a "zoner or a conductor" who warps the battlefield with metal objects, a depiction that closely aligns with his comic book persona.

While details on specific gameplay features like combo trials and online modes remain limited to what was shown in hands-on demos, Sekine expressed confidence given ArcSystem Works' history in fighting game development. Discussions regarding DLC and long-term support also remain open-ended, with the team aiming to support the game as long as player excitement persists.
