Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, a new 2D tag-team fighting game developed by the creators of Guilty Gear, is set to release on August 6 for PlayStation 5 and Windows PC. The game features a distinct 4v4 combat system where players manage a team of four characters, summoning assist characters and swapping combatants on the fly. Unlike many tag-team titles, all characters on a player's team share a single health bar, which scales with the number of fighters present.
At launch, Marvel Tōkon will include five pre-made teams, each comprising four characters. The game introduces an Ease of Use rating for each fighter, with Ms. Marvel and Wolverine noted as being more accessible. Storm, however, is highlighted for her more complex Tempest mechanic, which allows for dynamic alteration of projectile trajectories.
The game's modes include Startup Battle for learning fundamentals, Battle Arcadia for a party-game-like experience, and Episode Mode, which presents a story through motion comics illustrated by various artists. The developers have also announced plans for four DLC characters in the game's first season, with Phoenix Cyclops being the first revealed addition.
Marvel Tōkon underwent a divisive open beta last weekend. While its visuals, which fuse anime and comic book aesthetics, garnered praise, the PC version was criticized for significant glitches. The game is scheduled to launch in three days.
