Nintendo has officially revealed Metroid Ravenous, a new 2D Metroid adventure slated for an early 2027 release exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2. The announcement came during a recent Nintendo Direct presentation, which showcased a debut trailer offering a glimpse of new villains and environments Samus will explore.
The trailer hinted at a novel gameplay mechanic where Samus "feeds" on enemies to acquire new powers, though the specifics of this augmentation remain undisclosed. Players can expect to see Samus in a new green-armored suit, the Metroid Suit, complete with a glowing energy sword. This distinctive suit will also be featured in an Amiibo figure included with the game's Collector's Edition.
Metroid Ravenous marks Samus Aran's return to the 2D side-scrolling format for the first time since 2021's Metroid Dread. This latest 2D installment follows Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, which launched in December after an extensive development period.
The same Nintendo Direct also featured the unveiling of Kirby and the World Beyond, an open-world Kirby game, alongside new editions of Pikmin 4 and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. Third-party reveals included Persona 6 for Nintendo Switch 2, a Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core Reunion, and a port of Monster Hunter Wilds.
Metroid Ravenous is scheduled to launch on January 28, 2027, for the Nintendo Switch 2.
