Minecraft is introducing a highly requested feature that has been absent for 17 years: the ability to sit down. A new update will add craftable cushions, providing players with a straightforward way to rest.
Producer Gustav Höglund confirmed the addition, noting that while players have previously found creative methods to simulate sitting, such as using boats, minecarts, or even animals, these did not constitute true sitting. The new cushions are designed to offer a simple and immersive way to relax within the game world. "Now there is finally this straightforward way of just putting down a cushion and sitting down," Höglund stated. He also suggested that the cushions will open up numerous new building possibilities for players.
The cushions will be available in 16 different colors and can be crafted using new wool slabs. This addition comes as Minecraft developer Mojang Studios navigates organizational changes within its parent company, Xbox.
Mojang was among the studios affected by recent layoffs. Additionally, Mojang and the Candy Crush studio King will now report directly to Xbox CEO Asha Shamra, who identified them as Xbox's largest units by monthly active players. As part of this Xbox "reset," Minecraft studio head Helen Chiang has been promoted to chief operating officer at Xbox, tasked with unifying businesses under a single operating model.
Minecraft has achieved massive sales figures, with hundreds of millions of copies sold, not including spin-off titles such as Minecraft Dungeons, which is set to receive a sequel in September. The franchise's reach also extends beyond gaming, with a successful Minecraft movie released in 2025 and a sequel planned for 2027.
