ArenaNet's long-running Guild Wars franchise is set to branch into the collectible card game (CCG) genre with the newly revealed Mistbound: Guild Wars Card Game. The free-to-play title is currently in development for PC and mobile platforms, marking the series' first foray into CCGs.
Mistbound is the product of an unusual collaboration, with ArenaNet licensing the intellectual property to bilibili, the Chinese company known for its video-sharing platform. Bilibili will handle publishing duties, while development is being undertaken by Korean studio NC.
A key gameplay feature highlighted for Mistbound is the ability to move cards in multiple directions on the 5x3 grid battlefield each turn. This mechanic is intended to introduce action game-like elements, such as flanking and repositioning, into the turn-based combat.
The game will feature both single-player and player-versus-player modes. Players will select a commander, whose unique passive traits and active abilities are inspired by Guild Wars 2's Professions, to lead their forces. These commanders will be familiar characters from the Guild Wars universe. The developers aim to bridge the gap between traditional deck-building and MMO experiences, incorporating original Guild Wars composers for the soundtrack and including voice acting.
Details regarding Mistbound's monetization strategy, a crucial aspect for the longevity of CCGs, have not yet been disclosed. This follows closely on the heels of the Guild Wars 3 reveal earlier this month, where ArenaNet stated its intention to avoid pay-to-win microtransactions and subscription fees for the upcoming MMO. Whether Mistbound will adopt a similar player-friendly approach to its monetization remains to be seen.
Mistbound: Guild Wars Card Game does not have a confirmed release date at this time. Interested players can follow the official website for future updates.
