Nintendo's recent focus on remaking and re-releasing classic titles has drawn discussion, with legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto stepping in to defend the practice. Miyamoto stated in an interview with Famitsu, as reported by Nintendo Everything, that these remakes are not just for nostalgia but serve as vital tools for introducing older games to a new generation of players and ultimately leading to future developments.
While Nintendo has a long history of reissuing its beloved games, this year has seen two prominent examples: the recently launched Star Fox and the upcoming remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the Switch 2. The Star Fox remake, in particular, has been noted by some as the third reimagining of its Nintendo 64 predecessor. The new Ocarina of Time remake will join various previous re-releases of the original N64 game and its 3DS port.
Miyamoto addressed criticisms that Nintendo might be releasing too many remakes by explaining the necessity of making older games accessible. "After five years, a lot of people have outgrown games and stop playing them," he noted. "Young people today don't have the opportunity to play games from 10 years ago, so remaking them to be more playable and releasing them again is a good way to meet the demand."
He further elaborated on the broader impact of these projects, teasing that "Letting people know the original games also leads to future developments." This suggests that Nintendo views these remakes as a strategic investment, not just a way to capitalize on existing intellectual property.
Fans are already anticipating new installments in franchises that have seen recent remakes. Following the appearance of Fox McCloud in the Super Mario Bros. Movie and the Star Fox remake, there is speculation about an entirely new Star Fox game. Similarly, with the Ocarina of Time remake on the horizon, it is widely expected that Nintendo is also working on a full-fledged follow-up to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
Nintendo officially confirmed the Ocarina of Time remake last month during a Nintendo Direct presentation, following significant leaks and fan speculation. An initial teaser showcased the game's updated 3D art style and confirmed a 2026 release window. Although details remain sparse, a now-removed product description indicated that the remake is likely to be a faithful rendition of the N64 original.
