Sony has revealed the lineup of free games for PlayStation Plus Essential subscribers in July 2026, headlined by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Players can add the first-person shooter, along with the RPG adventure For the King 2 and the action RPG CrossCode, to their libraries starting July 7.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, the 2023 installment in the popular franchise, was initially conceived as an expansion before becoming a full release. The game features a campaign centered on Task Force 141's efforts to prevent World War III, but its multiplayer suite and a Zombies mode, similar to Call of Duty: Warzone, are expected to be the main draws for many players.
For the King 2 offers a blend of roguelike and tabletop gaming elements. This title supports solo play and four-player co-op, challenging players to overthrow an oppressive queen. Its 30-hour campaign is divided into seven distinct adventures. A new addition in this sequel is the battle grid, which emphasizes strategic positioning in its turn-based combat.
CrossCode is a retro-inspired action RPG that features visuals reminiscent of the Super Nintendo era. The game boasts "Zelda-esque dungeons" and fast-paced combat within a science-fiction narrative. Players can expect to encounter over 120 enemy types across seven large dungeons and complete more than 100 quests, offering a substantial amount of content that has garnered over 10,000 "very positive" reviews on Steam.
PlayStation Plus Essential subscribers still have until July 7 to claim the June free games: Grounded Fully Yoked Edition, Nickelodeon All Star Brawl 2, and Warhammer 40,000: Darktide.
PlayStation Plus Essential, the entry-level tier of Sony's subscription service, provides access to online multiplayer, a monthly selection of free PS4 and PS5 games, cloud storage, and discounts on the PlayStation Store. The service costs $10.99 per month, $27.99 for three months, or $79.99 annually, following a price increase across all PlayStation Plus tiers in May.
