Mortal Shell 2's limited physical edition for PlayStation 5 has seen its stock reservations nearly depleted ahead of the game's August 20 release date, according to publisher Playstack. The developer, Cold Symmetry, has acknowledged that demand has "exceeded expectations and unfortunately supply across a number of retailers has now been fully reserved."

This rapid sell-out indicates a strong consumer appetite for physical game copies, a trend that stands in contrast to some industry shifts towards digital-only distribution. The publisher noted that due to the proximity of the release date, it is unlikely that additional copies will be made available before August 20. Playstack is reportedly working with the distribution partner to address the demand, but cautioned that "there is no guarantee of a stock replenishment after launch."

The exclusive PS5 physical release, dubbed the Revered Edition, includes a physical disc, a collector's box, an art book, a SteelBook case, art prints, and preorder bonus skins. The edition was priced at $69.99.

This situation surfaces as the debate surrounding physical versus digital games intensifies. Sony recently announced its intention to cease production of physical game discs for new titles starting in January 2028, signaling a digital-only future for the PlayStation 6. This follows an earlier announcement that over 500 digital movies and shows purchased by users would be removed from the PlayStation Store and their libraries in September, further fueling concerns among consumers about the permanence of digital ownership.

Mortal Shell 2 is slated for release on August 20 for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
