During Gamescom Opening Night Live, Disney Illusion Island developer Dlala Studios unveiled its upcoming original intellectual property, Murals. This isometric action-adventure game is slated for a PC release in 2027 and reimagines classic childhood fairy tales with a decidedly unusual, humorous tone.

Murals will transport players into familiar narratives such as Hansel and Gretel, The Little Mermaid, and Rapunzel, but with significant alterations. For instance, Rapunzel's hair will actively attempt to harm her, and the "Sleeping Beauty" character is portrayed as suffering from insomnia due to an inability to sleep for weeks.

The player will assume the role of a nameless hero tasked with navigating these subverted fairy tale worlds. Combat and exploration will be aided by Eeries, described as "mystical, slightly very haunted, doo-dads and whatchamacallits" that grant the hero enhanced abilities. Some Eeries bolster the hero's weaponry, such as Strength In Misery, which increases damage dealt to enemies afflicted with status effects. Others directly influence the hero, like Thorny, a passive ability that can inflict damage on attacking enemies who hurt the hero.

This project marks Dlala Studios' first original IP in over a decade. The studio is known for its work on Battletoads and the 2023 title Disney Illusion Island. The game's announcement trailer showcased various gameplay elements, including combat against unique enemies and puzzles that leverage the Eeries' abilities. The game features a variety of Eeries to aid the player.

The visual style of Murals presents a vibrant yet unsettling world, blending cartoonish aesthetics with darker themes reflective of its twisted narrative approach. Different fairy tales appear to be segmented into distinct visual areas, each with unique environmental designs and character interpretations. Hansel and Gretel's world appears to feature unique environmental puzzles.

Gameplay will involve a mix of action-oriented combat and environmental problem-solving. Players will need to utilize their Eeries strategically to overcome challenges presented by both enemies and the game's peculiar world design. The introduction of status effects in combat suggests a layer of tactical depth to the encounters. Combat will involve unique enemies and potential status effects.

Murals is developed and published by Dlala Studios and is scheduled to arrive on PC in 2027. Further details regarding specific mechanics and the full roster of fairy tales to be included are expected in the future.
