Play By Play Studios has detailed its post-launch content roadmap for NBA The Run, the spiritual successor to the NBA Street series, which aims to address some of the criticisms leveled at the game since its June 9 release. The initial launch on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC received mixed reviews, with some critics noting its lack of content beyond online multiplayer.
Upcoming Content Updates
The studio's roadmap begins with a patch available now that addresses bugs and gameplay tweaks. Next month, NBA The Run will receive new content, including three new playable characters, with potential tie-ins to the recent NBA Draft.
August will introduce the game's first season, dubbed Summer Heat. This season will reward players with an evolving in-game championship belt. The August update will also implement a new drive camera for a more contemporary feel, a comms wheel, a practice mode, two new rulesets, additional shop items, leaderboards, and a new New York City court available in both daytime and tournament variations. Enhancements to player AI, the HUD, and game balancing are also slated for this update, alongside the possibility of new players, including potentially past legends.
Future Additions and Campaign Mode
Following the August update, new seasons are planned to arrive every two to three months throughout the fall and beyond. Future features under consideration include Ranked and Ladders for online play, as well as voice chat functionality. The most significant addition on the horizon is a campaign mode, which the developer is targeting for spring 2027. Play By Play Studios has stated that this mode is intended to be playable solo or with friends, both locally and online, emphasizing that its development will require considerable time to ensure quality.
