Netflix is expanding its gaming portfolio with Netflix Minigolf, a new party game set to launch on July 28 for all subscribers. Developed by Next Games, one of Netflix's internal studios, the title will feature over 60 levels set in the universes of popular Netflix series including Stranger Things, Bridgerton, and Squid Game. The game combines elements of minigolf and pinball, allowing players to compete in a couch co-op format.
Players will assume the roles of characters from these various shows. A key gameplay mechanic involves collecting "Pranks," which can be deployed to disrupt opponents' progress. As with other Netflix games, the smartphone serves as the controller, supporting local play for up to four participants. The release date strategically coincides with a surge in golf-related content on Netflix, following the recent debut of The Hawk, a golf show starring Will Ferrell.
Netflix Minigolf follows other recent game releases from the company, such as a World Cup game and the horror title Unhinged. These releases come as Netflix continues to refine its gaming strategy after an earlier, more ambitious push into AAA game development faltered. The company's current focus appears to be on accessible social and party games designed for quick, easy play.
Sean Krankel, Netflix Games' narrative executive, expressed a vision for Netflix to become a recognized and natural destination for interactive entertainment. "I would love, in a year or two, for people to be going: ‘This is naturally the place that I would go to play a story,’" Krankel stated. He aims to create new forms of interaction with stories and characters that feel intuitive and approachable, comparing the desired experience to visiting Disneyland for a ride or participating in an escape room, ultimately positioning games as another familiar form of entertainment.
