Netflix is set to release its Cloverfield-style sci-fi thriller, The Last House, on August 7, just one week before J.J. Abrams' upcoming film, The End of Oak Street, premieres on August 14. Both films explore the unsettling premise of families whose seemingly idyllic suburban lives are disrupted by mysterious and dangerous circumstances.
The Last House, directed by Louis Leterrier, stars Greta Lee and Wagner Moura as a married couple whose family of four find themselves sealed inside their home with no means of escape. As days turn into weeks and months, they realize the entire world is facing the same confinement. With dwindling resources and no connection to the outside, the family begins to question whether they are being punished or protected from an unknown danger. The film appears to lean into a more terrifying aspect of the sci-fi-thriller genre, focusing on the home itself transforming into a place of horror.
In contrast, The End of Oak Street, produced by Abrams' Bad Robot banner and starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, is set in the 1980s. This film follows the Platt family who discover their entire neighborhood has been transported to a location populated by dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures. While the Platts are trapped in an unfamiliar and dangerous environment, they are able to leave their house and explore their new surroundings in an effort to survive.
Despite their differing settings and specific threats—one family sealed within their home, the other relocated to a prehistoric landscape—both films share the core concept of an unknown entity or force disrupting domestic tranquility. The core similarity lies in the families' suburban lives being threatened by a danger whose intentions and nature remain unclear. Whether the films will ultimately offer different interpretations of the entity's purpose is yet to be seen.
