William Gibson's 1981 novel Neuromancer, a foundational text of the cyberpunk genre, has long been considered too complex or visually challenging for adaptation. However, Apple TV+ is now set to bring the Sprawl to life, with the first trailer for its series debuting at San Diego Comic-Con. The show promises to explore the dense, cable-ridden dystopia and cyberspace that Gibson first introduced.

The series follows Case, a disgraced hacker whose nervous system was damaged by the Yakuza. His life of squalor is interrupted when former military operative Armitage and street samurai Molly Millions offer to restore his abilities in exchange for his participation in a high-stakes heist. The narrative is set to delve into the hidden motives behind the caper as the crew travels across space colonies and through digital landscapes.

Callum Turner, known for Green Room and Fantastic Beasts, stars as Case, with Briana Middleton of The Inheritance portraying Molly. Mark Strong, recognizable from The Kingsmen, takes on the role of Armitage. The trailer offers a glimpse of the characters navigating the criminal underworld and the digital realm, aiming for a balance between classic cyberpunk aesthetics and a fresh visual approach.

Previous attempts to adapt Neuromancer have failed to gain traction over the decades. A notable effort by director Vincenzo Natali in 2010 produced concept art but never progressed. While a star-studded video game and a BBC Radio play exist, and the '90s film Johnny Mnemonic drew inspiration from the novel, it took significant liberties. This Apple TV+ series marks the most ambitious adaptation to date.

The Neuromancer series is slated for release in January 2027. It is executive produced by Jack Ryan showrunner Graham Roland and Sleight director JD Dillard. Musician Drake is also listed as an executive producer.
