Sony Santa Monica Studio has announced a new God of War game starring Kratos, which will serve as a direct continuation of the story initiated in the upcoming God of War Laufey. The revelation was made by Cory Barlog, head of creative at the studio, during San Diego Comic-Con.
Barlog explained that the events of God of War Laufey, slated for release in February 2027, are intrinsically linked to Kratos' next adventure. "Everything we are doing in the Faye game is a continuation of what came before and to set up and expand what comes next," Barlog stated, as reported by IGN. He emphasized that while Laufey's story is distinct, it remains part of a larger narrative tapestry that the studio intends to explore, featuring various characters. "But there's always going to be Kratos games, like, throughout the whole history. We're super excited about that," he added.
Specific details regarding the new Kratos-led God of War game, including its release window, setting, and primary platform, have not yet been disclosed. The studio is currently focused on God of War Laufey, which received a 20-minute gameplay preview during a June State of Play livestream. This upcoming title explores the story of Faye, Kratos' deceased wife.
The God of War franchise is experiencing a busy period. In addition to the forthcoming God of War Laufey and the new Kratos title, the series has seen the release of the metroidvania-inspired spin-off Sons of Sparta earlier this year. Furthermore, a remake of the original God of War trilogy is reportedly in development.
