Blizzard has announced a new entry in the StarCraft series, revealed at BlizzCon with a cinematic trailer. Titled simply "StarCraft," the game is slated for a 2030 release and will diverge from the franchise's real-time strategy roots, taking the form of an open-world shooter.
The cinematic trailer focused on the preparation and deployment of a Terran Dominion Space Marine, featuring a speech from Arcturus Mengsk. The footage concluded with the marine engaged in combat against the Zerg, followed by a scene depicting the repair of his damaged armor. This narrative suggests the game will be set during or prior to the events of StarCraft 2, with a specific emphasis on the Space Marine experience.
This marks Blizzard's second attempt at an action-oriented StarCraft spin-off. The studio previously worked on "StarCraft Ghost," a title that endured a lengthy and troubled development cycle throughout the 2000s before ultimately being canceled. While "Ghost" focused on the character Nova, the new shooter appears to draw little from that earlier project.
No gameplay footage was shown during the announcement, which is to be expected given the game's distant release window. The reveal did not include any indications of a new StarCraft real-time strategy title, a possibility that had been a subject of speculation among fans.
