Tomb Raider: Catalyst, the next installment in the long-running action-adventure series, has been delayed to 2028, according to an Amazon gaming executive. This shift means the game will also be the first Tomb Raider title ever released on PlayStation without a physical disc version.

Jeffrey Gattis, Amazon's general manager of gaming, announced the revised release window during a recent appearance on The Game Business Show. He stated that "Atlantis comes February 12th of next year and then we’ll follow on in 2028 with the next one." Gattis was discussing Amazon Luna, the company's game streaming service, and its upcoming projects.

The previously announced Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, an Unreal Engine 5 remake of the original game, has also been pushed back to early 2027 from its initial 2026 release. The exact reasons for these delays remain unclear, though potential factors include a crowded release schedule in late 2026, influenced by Grand Theft Auto VI's anticipated launch, and ongoing development challenges.

Crystal Dynamics, the studio behind the new Tomb Raider titles, has reportedly experienced waves of layoffs, which could contribute to development hurdles. The 2028 release for Catalyst places it beyond Sony's planned discontinuation of physical game disc production for new PlayStation releases, which is set to begin in January 2028.

Sony's earlier announcement stated, "Physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028. Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only." While this policy was announced for games releasing after January 2028, the delay of Tomb Raider: Catalyst means it will fall under this new digital-only model for its PlayStation release, even if it was initially planned for a disc version. Analysts predict that future PlayStation consoles, such as the PS6, will likely be digital-only devices.
