Games Workshop has unveiled the debut trailer for its new Warhammer 40,000 animation, The Butcher's Nails, which is slated for release on the Warhammer TV streaming platform. The trailer prominently features a World Eaters Berzerker named Makrath engaging in combat, with much of the action presented from a first-person perspective, offering a glimpse into what a dedicated first-person Chaos Space Marine video game could entail.
The animation follows Makrath as he teams up with members of the Iron Warriors Chaos Space Marine faction to assault loyalist Space Marines and Astra Militarum soldiers. The trailer showcases Makrath's visceral attacks from his viewpoint within his helmet, incorporating visual elements reminiscent of first-person shooter HUDs, such as the positioning of his Bolter at the bottom of the screen and enemy outlines. The intense combat, described as extremely gory and relentless, evokes comparisons to titles like Doom.
While the popular third-person title Space Marine 2 is highly regarded, the first-person perspective shown in The Butcher's Nails has sparked interest in the possibility of a big-budget first-person Space Marine game. The World Eaters legion, known for their extreme anger and the influence of the "Butcher's Nails" implants that drove them to berserk combat, are highlighted as a particularly suitable fit for such a game, emphasizing ultra-gory, fast-paced melee combat.
The animation's approach to depicting the conflict through Makrath's eyes is deliberate. According to Games Workshop, "much of the action is from Makrath’s perspective — literally depicting what he sees from inside his helmet." The company further noted that "the action is relentless — the entire episode is almost a single non-stop fight scene."
This animation offers a distinct vision compared to existing Warhammer 40,000 shooter titles like Boltgun, suggesting a desire for a first-person experience that moves beyond the traditional portrayal of loyalist Space Marines. In related Warhammer 40,000 news, Games Workshop recently issued takedown requests for popular Tabletop Simulator mods, causing community backlash.
