A new website, Call of Duty Ambience, allows users to listen to multiplayer voice chat from classic Call of Duty titles, evoking the atmosphere of online lobbies from the Xbox 360 era. The site features an interface designed to resemble the Xbox 360 dashboard, complete with dated gamertags and classic visuals.
Currently, the website supports three Call of Duty games: Modern Warfare 2, Black Ops, and Black Ops 2. These titles were chosen for their prominent multiplayer lobbies, where players often engaged in extended conversations and trash-talking between matches. The creator, app-maker Mike Wing, stated that he developed the website because he personally finds the sound of arguing Call of Duty players more soothing than white noise. Wing shared his creation on X, formerly Twitter, with a demonstration video.
These lobbies were a significant part of the social experience in early Call of Duty multiplayer games, fostering a sense of community that has largely diminished in more recent installments. While recent ports of Black Ops 1 and 2 have reintroduced some elements of this older style of play, Call of Duty Ambience provides a dedicated audio experience that leans heavily into this nostalgic, often chaotic, aspect of the series' history. The site aims to capture the specific soundscape of those early online interactions for players who miss that unique social dynamic.
