Nexus Mods, the most prominent platform for video game modifications, has announced its acquisition of SteamDB, a widely used third-party service for tracking Steam database information and player counts. The terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

SteamDB will continue to operate under its existing name and brand, maintaining its community and identity, according to Nexus Mods. However, the site's longtime sole operator, xPaw, has stepped down, citing burnout and a changing internet landscape as reasons for selling the project.

xPaw explained that the increasing mental load of managing the site independently and a diminished passion for the project, partly due to the rise of AI and a perceived alteration of the internet he once loved, contributed to his decision. He had been searching for a suitable partner to carry on SteamDB's legacy, a search that concluded with Nexus Mods.

Nexus Mods, under its new owner Victor Folmann, who took over in June 2025, views SteamDB's extensive historical data as a significant asset. The platform collects detailed information on game builds, depots, manifests, files, and update histories across Steam. Folmann highlighted the value this data could bring to the modding community, as mods are often developed for specific game versions.

"As you all know, mods are often built around a particular version of a game, so when there's an update for it, your game that was perfectly modded and working the day before now just…doesn't," Folmann stated. "SteamDB already tracks an incredible amount of information about game builds, depots, manifests, files, and update history across Steam, including years of historical data. Being able to connect that information with modding tools and mod metadata opens up some really interesting possibilities for making modding more reliable."

Nexus Mods emphasized its commitment to upholding the responsibility of managing a community-dependent service and its shared vision with xPaw for creating useful tools for gamers. The transition of ownership is reportedly underway, with xPaw expected to collaborate with Nexus Mods over the coming months to ensure a smooth handover.
