Nexus Mods will not implement a complete ban on AI-generated mods, opting instead to strengthen existing disclosure requirements for creators. The platform's owners have decided to expand their rules to ensure users are better informed about the use of artificial intelligence in mod creation.

According to Nexus Mods owner and CEO Victor Folmann, an outright ban is not considered the solution. He explained that AI is integrated into various stages of mod development, from script completion to asset generation, making it difficult to establish clear boundaries for an outright prohibition. Folmann stated that a ban would merely obscure AI's use rather than eliminate it, advocating instead for transparency and regulation on the platform.

AI-generated mods will remain welcome on Nexus Mods, provided they adhere to specific criteria concerning permissions, transparency, presentation, and conduct. The platform will not use user mods to train AI or license them for such purposes. Folmann emphasized that these decisions are aimed at balancing community opinions while adapting to evolving AI tools, with user feedback guiding future adjustments.

New regulations will mandate that mods tagged as AI-assisted include a public explanation detailing how and where AI was utilized. These AI tags will be more prominent on mod pages, appearing directly after adult content tags for easier visibility. The site is also developing new permission options related to AI usage, training, and derivative works to grant modders greater control over their creations.

Nexus Mods is also investing in security tools and specialized staff to counter concerns about AI facilitating the creation of malicious code within mods. Mod creators have a 60-day grace period, extending until January 2nd, to ensure their existing works comply with the new rules. Folmann views the mixed reception to these changes as an indication that the platform has found a balanced approach, prioritizing transparency over prohibition.
