World of Warcraft: Forever is undergoing a substantial balance patch ahead of its launch, with developers adjusting creature health and class damage to foster more dynamic gameplay and unique class identities.
Community manager Kaivax explained on the official WoW forums that the development team realized the constraints of adhering to Classic power budgets were limiting the addition of new features and making iconic abilities feel less impactful. To address this, damage across classes has been increased, and the health of higher-level creatures has been raised to compensate.
"This additional 'headroom' has allowed us to tune things to a place that we hope feels better overall," Kaivax stated. The aim is to move beyond simply replicating Classic-era power levels and instead create a more engaging experience that allows for exciting design options.
The patch notes also indicate a shift away from homogenizing class abilities. Instead of striving for perfect numerical equality, the goal is for each class to feel valuable and possess unique strengths. For instance, tanks have received significant threat generation buffs. Warrior's defensive stance threat bonus has increased from 30% to 80%, and Druid's bear form has seen a jump from 50% to 115%. Paladins have also received similar threat generation enhancements. These changes are intended to offset the removal of Blessing of Salvation, ensuring threat management is not solely reliant on a single spell.
New abilities are also being introduced. Rogues will gain "Shank," an off-hand weapon ability that generates energy differently based on specialization: Combat rogues gain more energy, Subtlety rogues get extra combo points, and Assassination rogues can apply a vulnerability debuff to enemies.
While the developers have used beta testing data to tune the game, they anticipate further adjustments after launch based on player data. However, barring bugs and extreme outliers, significant tuning changes are not planned before raids become available next month. The team views these changes as a starting point, with class design expected to continue evolving over time, mirroring the original game's post-launch development.
