After being placed on hold in 2023, Nightdive Studios has revived its remaster of the 1998 first-person shooter SiN, now officially titled SiN: Reloaded. The project, initially announced in 2020, is back on track for a release before the end of 2026 across multiple platforms. To accompany the news, a substantial gameplay trailer has been released, and a Steam demo is available for download immediately.
SiN: Reloaded is set to launch on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. The remaster utilizes Nightdive's proprietary KEX Engine, a significant upgrade from the original Quake 2 engine. The package will include the original SiN campaign along with its Wages of SiN expansion.
Nightdive has promised a visual overhaul for SiN: Reloaded, targeting up to 4K resolution at 144 frames per second. Enhancements include anti-aliasing, high-definition textures and models, and updated 2D and menu art, all while aiming to preserve the original game's aesthetic. Players will have the option to switch between the remastered visuals and the original SiN Gold version. The remaster also features control scheme overhauls and redesigned maps, alongside the addition of achievements.
Originally developed by Ritual Entertainment, SiN followed Colonel John R. Blade as he navigated the dystopian megacity of Freeport in 2037, confronting the shadowy SinTek corporation. The game blended dystopian world-building with a notably less serious tone, a characteristic that, coupled with its satisfying gunplay, has garnered it a dedicated following over the years. Larry Kuperman, former VP of business development at Nightdive, previously stated that SiN, like System Shock 2, was a title the studio felt an obligation to revisit due to owning the rights, often setting it aside for more time-critical projects.
While SiN included online multiplayer, its story-driven campaign is what it is most remembered for. The remaster aims to bring this experience to modern hardware, offering improvements to both visuals and gameplay.
