Nightdive Studios has officially confirmed the existence of a new campaign for the upcoming remaster of Thief: The Dark Project, titled "The Tarnished Mirror." This announcement follows recent leaks of Steam achievements that alluded to the new content. A brief teaser video on YouTube acknowledged the leak, revealed the campaign's name, and stated that further details would be shared on November 2.

The teaser video playfully showed a compilation of news posts about the leaked campaign, including one from PC Gamer. It concluded with new key art for the remaster, featuring Garrett, created by artist Alexandru "Dominus" Negoita. A logo for "Thief: The Dark Project Remastered - The Tarnished Mirror" was displayed alongside a line of dialogue from Garrett, humorously remarking, "Huh, not so secret anymore." The article notes that this line is likely a pre-existing quote from the original games rather than a new recording by voice actor Stephen Russell.

The existence of "The Tarnished Mirror" was first noticed when achievement-tracking site Exophase acquired a list of achievements for unreleased games, which included details about this previously unannounced expansion for Thief Remastered. While Exophase has since removed the most revealing information, the original list remains accessible via The Wayback Machine.

The addition of a new, official campaign for Thief, a game celebrated for its immersive sim gameplay, marks a significant development nearly 28 years after its initial release. While the Thief community has produced a substantial amount of high-quality fan-made levels, the prospect of an original campaign developed by Nightdive Studios is considered a notable event. The studio's previous work on a bottom-up remake of System Shock 1 has been praised, leading to anticipation for more original content from the developer.

"The Tarnished Mirror" joins other surprise expansion packs for older games in 2026, such as The Witcher 3's "Songs of the Past" and Quake's "Dawn of the Machine." Thief Remastered is slated for a winter release window, with hopes for an earlier launch.
