Rumors surrounding potential upgrades for the Nintendo Switch 2 have intensified, with a recent report from a Korean technology website indicating that serious discussions are underway at Nintendo regarding the possibility of an OLED model. While an OLED version of the original Switch was released after its initial launch, early speculation about an OLED Switch 2 has emerged sooner than many anticipated.

According to ZDNET Korea, if the OLED model plans proceed, production would not commence before the end of 2027, suggesting a potential 2028 release. This would represent a roughly three-year gap between the LCD and OLED versions of the Switch 2, compared to the four-and-a-half-year wait for the original Switch OLED model, which launched in late 2021.

Samsung Display, a supplier for the original Switch's OLED screen, is also reportedly being considered for the Switch 2. A key factor influencing the decision is the cost implication of incorporating an OLED panel, which was also a consideration for the initial LCD-only Switch 2 release. The ongoing component shortages could also impact this decision.

An insider cited by ZDNET Korea claims that Nintendo is considering an upgrade to the screen's resolution, potentially moving from the HD (1280x720) resolution of the Switch 1 OLED model to FHD (1920x1080). This upgrade aligns with the Switch 2's existing 1080p native resolution in handheld mode. The report suggests that if the Switch 2 OLED model is confirmed in the coming months, product development could begin by the end of this year.

Such an enhancement could also address existing criticisms regarding the LCD screen's performance, including issues with input delay, ghosting, and imprecise HDR support, which have been noted by technical analysis outlets. Nintendo has also confirmed that minor revisions of Switch 2 products, including the console itself, will be implemented in Europe starting this summer to comply with the Right to Repair directive and new battery regulations.
