Nintendo has announced a substantial 90% year-over-year increase in digital sales revenue for the first fiscal quarter, encompassing April through June 2026. This surge contributed to a total digital sales revenue of 132.7 billion yen, approximately $837 million.

The company attributed this growth primarily to an increase in sales of downloadable versions of packaged software. This trend comes at a time when other major console manufacturers are reportedly shifting away from physical media, with Sony slated to cease manufacturing PlayStation game discs in 2028 and rumors suggesting Xbox may follow suit. Nintendo, however, appears to be maintaining its strategy, though some players question the distinction between its current physical release method using Game-Key Cards and digital downloads.

In terms of hardware, the Nintendo Switch 2 continues to show strong sales momentum. The console sold 3.82 million units during the reported quarter, bringing its total sales to 23.68 million units since its launch in June 2025. Overall software unit sales for the Switch 2 reached 58.17 million.

While specific sales figures were not provided for all titles this quarter, Nintendo noted that Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, Star Fox, and Pokemon Pokopia performed well. The company did report that Switch 2 software sales totaled 9.46 million units in the quarter, and the legacy Switch title Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream sold an additional 7.94 million units.

Top Performing Titles

Among the best-selling games across both console generations to date, Mario Kart World leads with 15.39 million units sold. Other notable performers include Donkey Kong Bananza at 4.78 million units, Pokemon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition with 3.99 million units, and Pokemon Pokopia with 3.68 million units.

Future Outlook

Despite the robust performance, Nintendo has indicated no changes to its original financial forecast for the fiscal year. The company aims to sustain the momentum for the Switch 2 hardware by ensuring it is delivered with compelling software to a wide range of consumers. Upcoming releases intended to support this goal include Splatoon Raiders, which launched in July, and the yet-to-be-released Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave, Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, and a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The company continues to emphasize strong sales momentum for the hardware in its second year on the market.
