The Nintendo Switch 2 has achieved a new milestone, becoming the fastest-selling Nintendo console after its first five quarters. The console has sold an additional 3.82 million units in the last quarter, bringing its lifetime total to 23.68 million units within 13 months of launch. This sales figure surpasses the original Wii, which had sold 17.79 million units in a comparable period. Nintendo has projected total Switch 2 sales to reach 36.35 million by the end of its current fiscal year on March 31, 2027.

Despite an initial price point that some considered high, the Switch 2's strong performance continues. The original Switch console also remains on the market, with Nintendo reporting 660,000 new units sold last quarter. This brings the lifetime total for the original Switch to 156.59 million units. The continued sales of the older model raise questions about who is purchasing it, especially when the newer Switch 2 is available for only $110 more.

In terms of software, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream has emerged as a significant hit, selling 7.96 million units. This figure exceeds the sales of the 3DS entry in the series and positions it as a notable success for the life simulation genre. The game's cross-gen nature likely contributed to its strong performance, appealing to the large install base of the original Switch. Other titles also saw notable sales: Donkey Kong Bananza sold 4.78 million units, and Pokémon Pokopia reached 3.68 million sales as of the end of June (excluding Japan). Kirby Air Riders sold 1.9 million units.

However, not all releases have reached the same level of success. Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, a puzzle adventure released in May, did not achieve 1 million sales and was not listed among the top-selling Switch 2 games, even with Yoshi's presence in the Mario Galaxy Movie. Similarly, Star Fox has sold under 1 million units as of June 30, 2026, with its launch on June 25 allowing only five days of sales to be counted. The Switch 2 version of Metroid Prime 4 also has not yet appeared on the list of top-selling first-party titles, indicating that only six first-party games on the platform have surpassed 1 million sales so far.

The digital versus physical sales ratio for the Switch 2 is also showing a slight shift. Digital sales now account for 61.5% of the total, up from 59.3% in the previous fiscal year's first quarter. This trend is influenced by the strong digital performance of games like Pokémon Pokopia and Tomodachi Life. It is worth noting that Nintendo categorizes game key cards as physical sales, despite them requiring digital downloads. This gradual shift suggests a move toward digital purchasing among Switch 2 owners, though at a slower pace compared to other platforms like the PlayStation 5.
