Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja are preparing to launch the inaugural downloadable content for Nioh 3, titled Hell Rising, on August 19. This expansion promises to introduce new gameplay elements and a narrative that propels the protagonist, Takechiyo, into a future version of Edo.
According to the blurb provided, Takechiyo's journey through time is guided by a mysterious yokai encountered in his dreams. The setting for Hell Rising is Edo in the year 1651, depicted as a desolate landscape ravaged by conflict. The description notes that this transformed Edo has become a chaotic battlefield, attracting yokai, human insurgents, and foreign alchemists.
The DLC will also feature new armaments for players. Among the additions are the hoko and shield, as well as the ninja hoko and shield. The hoko is described as a short spear with versatile combat applications, allowing for defensive maneuvers with the shield while simultaneously attacking, and tactical options such as projecting the shield towards adversaries.
For those seeking an even greater challenge, Nioh 3 will receive a new difficulty mode called The Enlightened One's Journey. This mode is positioned as being more demanding than the existing Shogun's Journey. Players who overcome The Enlightened One's Journey can expect enhanced rewards, including more potent equipment, additional Soul Cores, increased level caps, and higher Soul Matching capabilities. Access to The Enlightened One's Journey requires players to have already completed Shogun's Journey.
