Capcom has moved the release date for Onimusha: Way of the Sword, its long-awaited return for the action franchise, to September 4, 2026. This adjustment positions the game's launch three weeks earlier than its previously scheduled September 25 date, aiming to steer clear of the significant congestion expected in the gaming market.

The decision to alter the release date comes as many publishers prepare for the November launch of Grand Theft Auto 6, with a notable cluster of other major titles slated for release in late September. Onimusha was originally set to launch alongside titles like Control: Resonant and Silent Hill: Townfall, among others, all seemingly attempting to find space before the highly anticipated GTA 6.

Players who had pre-ordered the game on Nintendo Switch 2 are being refunded and will need to place new orders for the adjusted release date. Capcom stated, "We apologize for any inconvenience caused." However, pre-orders for the physical edition, including those made via e-Capcom, remain unaffected. This led to some confusion among fans, as Onimusha is distributed as a game key card on the Switch 2, prompting questions about the nature of a "physical edition."

Despite the scheduling shifts, Onimusha is still positioned to arrive shortly after other major releases such as Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, Star Wars Zero Company, and The Blood of Dawnwalker. The move could potentially offer the game a clearer path to visibility by avoiding the dense release schedule of late September, allowing it to stand out more as a summer release.

This latest entry marks the Onimusha series' return after a two-decade absence. The franchise's revival aims to continue Capcom's recent string of successful titles. The developer hopes that the revised launch window will provide more opportunities for players to engage with the game.
