Red Hook Studios has announced surprise downloadable content for the original Darkest Dungeon, more than ten years after its initial launch. Titled 'The Fire's Edge,' the new DLC is scheduled to release on August 18 and will bring two new hero classes, fresh Trinket mechanics, and three additional districts to the game's hamlet.

The Duelist and the Runaway, characters previously introduced in Darkest Dungeon II, are making their way to the first game. The Duelist is described as a complex damage dealer capable of maneuvering between party ranks, while the Runaway introduces the new Burn damage type, offering strong synergy with teams that favor Stuns and positional effects like Pull, Knockback, or Shuffle. Red Hook Studios notes that these will be re-imaginings of the characters specifically for the original Darkest Dungeon.

'The Fire's Edge' marks the first new DLC for Darkest Dungeon since 2020. Beyond the two new recruitable heroes, the DLC promises "new combat mechanics, powerful trinkets, and additional Hamlet districts."

Darkest Dungeon, released in 2016, was praised for its brutally stressful and expertly executed take on the roguelike genre. Despite the release of Darkest Dungeon II, many fans have continued to play the original title on Steam, making the announcement of new content for the first game a welcome, if unsurprising, development for its dedicated player base. 'The Fire's Edge' is currently available to wishlist on Steam.
