Palworld has officially launched its 1.0 version, two years after its initial early access release. The full game includes significant improvements to base building, the addition of new areas like islands and settlements, and a fresh roster of creatures to tame. While the update introduces a wealth of new content and features, notable visual adjustments have been made to the game's Pal designs, seemingly to further differentiate them from Nintendo's Pokémon.

This aesthetic shift follows ongoing legal proceedings. The Pokémon Company filed a lawsuit against Palworld developer Pocketpair in 2024, alleging patent infringement related to gameplay elements such as monster riding and catching mechanics. In response to the lawsuit, Pocketpair previously adjusted Palworld to move away from mechanics that mirrored Pokémon's creature-battling system, including disallowing actions like gliding with Pals. The latest update continues this trend, with returning players noting that several monster designs have been overhauled.

For instance, Pals such as Verdash and Robinquill, which were previously noted for their resemblance to specific Pokémon starters, now feature more distinct visual styles. Despite these changes, Palworld has also introduced new Pals in its 1.0 release that bear some resemblance to existing Pokémon, such as Hoodle, which has been compared to Mimikyu. Other Pals in the game continue to evoke comparisons to Pokémon like Garchomp, Eevee, and Ditto.

These design modifications and gameplay adjustments appear to be a deliberate effort by Pocketpair to distance Palworld from the Pokémon franchise, a concern brought to the forefront by the ongoing litigation. Pocketpair expressed disappointment regarding the lawsuit in May 2025, though the legal proceedings are expected to conclude around the end of 2026. The developer's proactive changes may impact the potential damages awarded if The Pokémon Company is successful in its suit.

Despite the ongoing legal issues and design changes, Palworld's 1.0 launch has been met with significant player engagement. The game has garnered over 460,000 concurrent players at the time of this writing and has quickly climbed to the top of Steam's bestsellers list. The full release also boasts expanded content, including new areas and enhanced user interface and graphics, as detailed in the extensive patch notes.
