Path of Exile developer Grinding Gear Games is preparing a significant overhaul of the action RPG's endgame in its upcoming patch 3.30. The update aims to address long-standing player concerns regarding a lack of excitement in loot drops and the overall staleness of late-game content.

Christopher "Octavian" Laferriere, speaking in a recent interview with streamer Zizaran, described the forthcoming update as an "extreme shakeup of the endgame." The goal is to inject new life into the game, which has been available for over a decade and has accumulated a vast number of unique league mechanics. Laferriere stated that patch 3.30 will "have a huge emphasis on endgame shakeup" and that developers "plan to get to as many existing league mechanics as possible and give them all something new, something interesting, something different from before."

One of the primary criticisms leveled against the current state of Path of Exile's endgame is the predictability of loot. Many players have expressed dissatisfaction with a majority of valuable items originating from chests rather than monster drops, and the inability to increase difficulty for greater rewards. This often leads to a sense that loot is not surprising or particularly rewarding.

The developers intend to re-evaluate how game mechanics interact with each other and to reconsider which items are tied to specific mechanics. The overarching aim is to make random loot drops more spontaneous and less deterministic, a design principle that is also being applied to the upcoming Path of Exile 2. Laferriere indicated that the scope of patch 3.30 will be substantial, potentially limiting the inclusion of smaller additions like new transfigured skill gems. The update is expected in approximately four months.
