Atlus is making adjustments to the character Yosuke in the upcoming remake of Persona 4, titled Persona 4 Revival, aiming to update his behavior to be more appropriate for contemporary audiences. The original 2008 game, and its updated Golden version, have faced criticism over nearly two decades for certain story elements that have not aged well, particularly concerning Yosuke's interactions.

Persona Team general producer Kazuhisa Wada confirmed the changes in an interview with Anime Corner during this year's Anime Expo. When asked about rewriting controversial scenes due to evolving audience expectations, Wada stated that "mostly with Yosuke, really," noting the character is "a little bit insensitive in terms of how he treats outsiders sometimes." This sentiment reflects a common perception among players that Yosuke exhibits misogynistic, homophobic, and transphobic remarks toward other characters. A notable instance cited is Yosuke's reaction during a camping scene, where he expresses fear that Kanji, a character exploring his sexuality and gender expression, might assault the other boys. Kanji's storyline delves into his questioning of his gender and attraction to Naoto, whose gender presentation is also a point of community discussion.

"We wanted to lighten that up and make it a bit more fitting for the world we live in now," Wada added regarding Yosuke's narrative arc. This is not the first time Atlus has revisited problematic content in its past titles. The 2024 remake, Persona 3 Reload, notably removed a scene that depicted a transgender character receiving insensitive commentary from the game's cast. Yosuke himself has seen modifications in several spin-off titles; Persona 4 Arena and Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, direct sequels released in 2012 and 2013 respectively, featured Yosuke acknowledging his past mistreatment of Kanji. Furthermore, Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth, released in 2018, softened some of Yosuke's misogynistic traits, despite its story being set concurrently with the original Persona 4. The adjustments planned for Persona 4 Revival appear consistent with these prior efforts.

Wada emphasized that the core of Persona 4 remains intact, with the remake's updates focused on ensuring the story and characters resonate appropriately in the modern era. The development team achieved this by preserving the characters' fundamental thoughts and actions while refining "the way we express some of this."

Persona 4 Revival is scheduled for release on February 18, 2027, and will be available on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
