Actor Peter Serafinowicz has detailed how a serendipitous meeting with director Alex Garland, a fellow enthusiast of FromSoftware's challenging titles, secured him a part in the upcoming Elden Ring movie. Serafinowicz, a well-known fan of the Dark Souls series, revealed his connection to the film during an interview.
Serafinowicz's passion for Dark Souls led him to contribute to the games themselves. He initially sought a voice acting role in Dark Souls 2, and while he voiced the character Mild-Mannered Pate, his most enduring contribution was providing the male character's dying sounds and pain grunts. These sounds have been carried over into subsequent FromSoftware titles, including Elden Ring, a fact Serafinowicz finds to be a unique form of digital immortality.
The connection to the Elden Ring movie began several years ago when Serafinowicz encountered Alex Garland at a reception. Both discovered their mutual admiration for Dark Souls, which quickly fostered a friendship. Serafinowicz left his contact information for Garland, leading to their continued connection.
Now, with Garland directing the Elden Ring film adaptation, Serafinowicz finds himself cast in the movie. He expressed disbelief and excitement at this turn of events, calling it one of his proudest achievements.
Garland, who is also a dedicated fan of Elden Ring, has reportedly completed a substantial script draft for the film. The movie is based on a mythological story conceived by George R. R. Martin and is being produced under the guidance of FromSoftware's Hidetaka Miyazaki. It is described as A24's most ambitious project to date, with a budget exceeding $100 million. The film's cast includes Cailee Spaeny, Ben Whishaw, and Nick Offerman, among others. Garland himself has shared his struggles with the game's notoriously difficult boss, Malenia, Blade of Miquella, noting that his approach to overcoming such challenges involves persistent attempts, a technique he learned from playing Dark Souls.
