Players of World of Warcraft are reporting a peculiar phenomenon since the game's 12.1 patch: characters whose players have disconnected are continuing to move and engage in combat on their own. This uncanny behavior deviates from the typical unresponsiveness or frozen state expected when a player loses their internet connection.
One of the most detailed accounts comes from Reddit user Stuperstrong, who shared a video showcasing a friend's Evoker character. In the footage, the character exhibits signs of a mid-encounter disconnect, yet subsequently resumes fighting independently. The stiff, robotic nature of these autonomous actions is described as unsettling by long-time players. Similar experiences have been shared by others, including one player whose warrior character charged a boss and attacked it for a significant period after their game had crashed and they were actively logging back in.
While the possibility of an elaborate hoax exists, the prevailing theory among players is that this may be an early indication of an unannounced disconnect protection feature. World of Warcraft has previously implemented NPC follower technology for its dungeon system, allowing AI-controlled characters to assist players. It is speculated that Blizzard may have adapted this technology to prevent a player's disconnection from derailing group content like dungeon runs or raids. Until an official explanation is provided by Blizzard, other theories, including more supernatural interpretations, remain on the table.
