The anticipated manufacturing cost for Sony's PlayStation 6 could be approaching $1,000 per unit, according to recent estimations from a reputable industry insider known as KeplerL2. This figure represents a notable increase from earlier projections and has significant implications for the console's potential retail price.
KeplerL2, who has a history of accurately forecasting AMD hardware plans, initially estimated in March that the bill of materials (BoM) for a single PS6 unit would be around $760. The updated assessment, shared on NeoGaf, now places this BoM cost at approximately $960. This $200 increase highlights potential challenges in keeping the console's production costs manageable.
The BoM cost only accounts for the price of individual components and does not include other essential expenses such as shipping, storage, or the substantial research and development investments required before launch. If these estimates hold true, Sony might need to sell the PS6 at a loss to maintain a retail price below the $1,000 mark, a strategy the company has employed with previous hardware generations.
A near-$1,000 launch price would represent a historic high for PlayStation consoles. However, the current market, influenced by ongoing shortages in RAM and storage, potentially driven by AI advancements, has seen an increase in acceptable entry-level prices for gaming hardware. The Steam Machine is cited as an example of a device that entered the market at a high price point.
KeplerL2 has also previously provided early specifications for a rumored PlayStation handheld device, expected to launch alongside the PS6. Sony has not yet officially announced the successor to the PlayStation 5, nor has it disclosed any details regarding its launch date or pricing strategy. The company has, however, adjusted the prices of its current PS5 lineup multiple times, with the most recent adjustment occurring in March. This trend, coupled with recent price increases from competitors like Xbox, suggests that further price adjustments for Sony's consoles could be on the horizon.
