Sony has announced that hundreds of purchased movies and television shows from Studio Canal will be removed from users' digital libraries on PlayStation starting September 1, 2026. The company attributes this removal to expiring content licensing agreements.
This change affects content previously acquired by users through the PlayStation Store. A social media post by user somatyk brought the news to wider attention after sharing a notification received from the PlayStation Store. The notification explicitly states, "From September 1, 2026, due to our content licensing agreements, you will no longer be able to access your previously purchased content from Studio Canal, and it will be removed from your video library."
Notable films that will become inaccessible include "Apocalypse Now: The Final Cut," "The Evil Dead," "Evil Dead 2," "From Dusk Till Dawn," "Hot Fuzz," "Inside Llewyn Davis," "Moonrise Kingdom," "Paddington 2," "Pan’s Labyrinth," the "First Blood/Rambo" trilogy, "Silver Linings Playbook," "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," "This Is Spinal Tap," and "Train to Busan." The television series affected include "American Gods," "The Young Pope," and "Trust Me."
The announcement does not mention any refunds or compensation for users who purchased this content. PlayStation discontinued the sale and rental of movies and TV shows in 2021, though users could still access content they had previously bought. However, PlayStation's End User Agreement, consistent with terms from many digital storefronts, indicates that users purchase licenses to view content, which can be revoked when licensing agreements expire.
